Have you heard the one about

the"Ghost of Mill Creek"?

Coon Rock is the name given to a large hilly area that points to the east from the regular line of bluffs on the south side of the Wisconsin River. Mill Creek makes an abrupt turn to the west from its northward flow and then flows into the Wisconsin River near this site.

Here are some of the theories on how Coon Rock received it's name:

  • The trappers used to dry out the pelts on the rocks along Mill Creek near what they named "Coon Rock."
  • Coon Rock was once a hamlet outside "Helena" (Helena still exists, but no real signs of the town of Coon Rock).
  • There used to be a boulder on this "hill" that resembled a Raccoon.
